Scanners and Reading Devices

Different scanning and reading devices are as follows:

Optical Scanner

An optical scanner is a fight-sending input device. It reads printed text and graphics and then translates the results into digital form. An important type of digital scanner is called a flatbed scanner. It works like a copy machine. It creates a copy of the documents in the memory. After scanning, the user can store it permanently, print it, fax it, send us an email or include it in another document.

The quality of a scanner is measured by the number of bits in a dot and the number of bits per inch. The optical resolution of some affordable scam is from 600 to 3000 dpi. Scanners are also used in image processing. Image processing is a process of
capturing storing, analyzing, displaying, printing, and manipulating images.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

Optical Character Recognition is a technology that reads typewritten, computer-printed, or handwritten characters from ordinary documents.

It translates the images into a form that can be recognized by the computer. Most OCR devices use a small optical scanner to read characters and sophisticated software to analyze them.

OCR devices read printed characters using an OCR font. The most commonly used OCR font is called OCR-A. An OCR device determines the shapes of characters by detecting patterns of light and dark. OCR software compares these shapes with predefined shapes stored in memory and converts the shapes into characters.

Optical Mark Recognition (QMR)

OMR stands for Optical mark recognition. These devices use a light beam to can input data to convert it into electrical/ digital signals. The signals are then sent to the computer for further processing. These devices are used to check tests or surveys such as SAT and GRE etc.

Bar Code Scanner

The bar code scanner uses a laser beam to read bar codes. Bar code is an identification code that consists of a set of vertical lines and spaces of different widths. The bar data that identifies the manufacturer and the item.

Different products like groceries, pharmacy supplies, vehicles, mail, magazines, and books contain bar codes. Different types of bar codes are used. Most popular are POSTNFI used by the US. Postal Service and Universal Product Code (UPC) used by retail and grocery stores.

Magnetic-Ink Character Recognition Reader (MICR)

Magnetic-ink character recognition reader is used to read text printed with magnetized ink. It is used by the bank industry for check processing. Each check contains MICR characters at the lower—left edge. These characters represent check number, bank number, and account number.

Wireless Input

Wireless input technology is used to obtain data directly at the location where the transaction or event occurs. Wireless input is used in factories, warehouses, outdoors, and other locations where heat and humidity are not easy to control. Handheld computers are used to collect data wirelessly. If these computers are connected to central computer-via the Internet, the data can be sent directly to the central computer.

Sensors Input Devices

A sensor is an input device that inputs data directly from the environment and stores it on a computer. It is usually used to detect speed, movement, weight, pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, and images, etc. Sensors can be used to sense weather conditions and earthquakes.

Radio Frequency Identification Devices

Radiofrequency identification technology is also known as RF-ID tagging. It is based on an identifying tag with a microchip that contains a specific code number. The code numbers are read by radio waves of a scanner linked to a database.

Radio-readable ID tags are also used by the postal service to monitor the flow of mail. Different stores use them to control the inventory and warehousing. They can be injected into animals so that the owners can identify them if they become separate.
