IO Hardware Devices

Speakers & Headsets

Some devices produce audio output. These devices produce music, speech, or other sounds like beep, etc. Speakers and headsets are two commonly used audio output devices.

Many personal computers have internal speakers. The quality of internal speakers is not very high. Sophisticated stereo speakers are used for high-quality audio output. Some monitors also contain speakers on their sides. A device called woofer or subwoofer is used to boost the low bass sounds.

Any person sitting near the computer can hear the audio output produced by the speaker. It may create disturbance for others. Headsets are also used to produce audio output. But only the person using the headset can hear this sound.

Data Projectors

A data projector is an output device that projects the output of the computer screen onto a larger screen. The output projected by the data projector can be viewed by a number of people very clearly. Data projectors are used in classes to deliver lectures to many students etc.

Types of Data Projects

Two types of data projectors are as follows:

  1. LCD Projector — LCD stands for liquid crystal display. LCD projector uses liquid. crystal display technology It is attached to the computer directly It uses its own light source to display the information shown on the computer screen
  2. DLP Projector — DLP stands for digital light processing. DLP projector uses tiny mirrors to reflect light. It Wines brighter and sharper muses than LCD projector.

Facsimile Fax Machine

Facsimile fax machine transmits and receives documents over the telephone line. The document may contain text, images, or handwritten contents. The fax machine at sending Side scans the document. It converts it into digital form and then transmits it. The fax machine at the receiving side converts this digital form into its original form and prints it.

Types of Fax Machines

There are two types of fax machines:

  1. Dedicated Fax Machine: It is a normal fax machine. It can send information to another fax machine. It can also receive information from another fax machine.
  2. Fax Modem: It is a circuit board inside the system unit. It can send and receive Mutation to and from another computer. It can also send information to a fax machine.

Multifunction Device

Multifunction device (MFD) is a device that provides the functionality of a printer, scanner, copy machine, and fax machine. These devices are also called multifunction peripherals (MFPs) or all-in-one devices. These devices are commonly used in offices to provide all facilities.

Terminals

The terminal is a device that performs input and output. It consists of a monitor, keyboard, and a video card. Different types of terminals are as follows:

  1. Dumb Terminal — It has no processing power and cannot function as an independent device. It can enter and transmit data to a computer to which it is connected. A dumb terminal is normally connected to a host computer. The host computer performs the processing and then sends the output back to the dumb terminal.
  2. Intelligent Terminal- It also contains memory and a processor to perform some functions independent of the host computer. It is also called a programmable terminal.
  3. Special-purpose Terminal — it performs specific tasks. It is designed for use in a particular industry. Two examples are point-of-sale terminals and automated teller machines.
  4. Point-of-sale (POS) terminal is used to record purchases at the point where the consumer purchases a product or service. It is used in grocery stores etc.
  5. Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a self-service banking machine. It connects to a host computer through a network. The user inserts a plastic bank card with a magnetic strip into the ATM and enters the password. The password is also called a personal identification number (PIN). It is used to access the bank account.
