What Is Search Engine?

The search engine is a website that provides the facility to find the required websites on a particular topic. A person can search for any topic on the Internet using search engines. The Internet contains a lot of information. A large number of websites about different topics are available. A person cannot remember all websites. Different websites can be searched using search engines.

The search engine contains a record of different websites. It can search the required websites and display them to the user. Search engines are very powerful tools for finding information.

 

Searching the Web

You can use a search engine by following these steps:

  1. Go to one of the search engine Web sites (e.g. www.google.com).
  2. Somewhere on the Web page, there will be a box for you to type in. Type In the keywords you are looking for.
  3. Now click on a button with the word “Search" on it. Clicking on this button will start your search and bring up a new Web page with a list of Web sites related to your topic on it.
  4. Clicking on one of the websites in the list will take you to that Web site

Many search engines also have "Directories" or lists of topics that are organized into categories. Browsing these Directories is also a very efficient way to find information on a given topic.

Important: Different search engines have different Web sites listed. Use many search engines to broaden your search.

Advanced Search Strategies

The following options are used in advanced search strategies:

“ ” Operator: Indicates a series of words that must appear next to each other. Example: “Good day sunshine” returns pages with this exact phrase.

+ Operator: Indicates that all the words must appear in the web page. Example: Sprouts + hockey will return pages that include both sports and hockey.

- Operator: Tells the search engine you do not want a word to appear in your search. Example: Sport hockey will return pages with sports but not on hockey.

* Operator: Use the wildcard (*) to search for plurals or variations of words. Example: Sing * finds singing and sings that* finds theater and theater.

AND, OR and NOT Operator: can be used in some search engines to specify your search. Example: Sports AND hockey NOT (baseball OR basketball).

Some portals contain information for the general public and some provide information for a specific group of people like lawyers, doctors, etc. A website for a specific group of people with similar interests is called the Web community. Some popular portals are Yahoo, Alta Vista, Amelia Online, Excite, The Microsoft Network, and Netscape.

A type of portals is specially designed for Web-enabled devices. It is known as a wireless portal. Wireless portals provide all facilities to mobile users.

News website provides different types of news related to current affairs, politics, sports, weather, etc. They provide stories, articles, and other materials. Popular magazines and newspapers provide news on websites. Some examples of news websites are:
